Get an inside look at student trainers Cole Stevenson and Brenna Kiel, as their share their experiences on the sidelines of the Virginia Tech Men's and Women's basketball teams.
Hi, I'm a coal Stevenson. I'm currently a junior here at Virginia Tech. And my role with the Virginia Tech men's basketball team is the full-time student under our athletic trainer. As a full-time student, your responsibilities are really just kinda picking up things that the athletic trainers here to teach you. It's really, I'd say the most introductory way of getting into working with athletics, the hands-on nature of what we get to dupe and tying it back to my majors. And really beneficial because there's a lot of things that you learn in class that you don't really see when you're in the classroom. But being able to work with athletics and then relating them to like, Oh, I took anatomy. Now this is a part of the body we're working on. This is what's happening. It's been very beneficial and it's actually makes it a lot more interesting and gets you more excited about it when you're actually getting to work with these people, like you or the athletic trainer or like you're in the profession. And connecting it towards your coursework. The opportunity to work with some of our top athletic trainers and the basketball coach has been so awesome because you really get to meet them on a personal relationship as well as a working relationship. And you get to see really what it's like. First experiment, just the ability to actually have your foot in the door and meet these people. Get to actually see these things that people are just watching TV. It's really quite an awesome experience. I'm bernie keel, I'm a junior and HFE sports medicine AID with one basketball team. So as an aid with the women's basketball team at various day-to-day. But generally, we mainly do hydration at the beginning, like setting up coolers with their water and Gatorade and then prove practice will help with funding. We have withdrawals, didn't pay out batch sizes to prevent injury or things to deal with ongoing injuries. And then afterwards the time or the same of clean up and also just helping them deal with any treatments that they need. We're going to top athletic trainers is really cool experience. As a little kid, I always dreamed of being a medical professional in some way, shape or form on the side of an elite sports team. So it's just awesome getting to see them live out their dream and treat these players that are so talented and their individual sports. But I want to ultimately go to physician assistant school and we need patient care experience for that. And this helps count towards that. And I just think it's a really unique way that I'm getting to see different injuries and treatments and also I see athletic trainers of course every day but then also physical therapist. You travel with doctors and see them before gained. And so I think that it's been really eye-opening to see you all levels of treatment and the continuity of care. Whichever field you choose to go into.
