Video duration: Best Practices For Grocery Shopping During Covid-19 Pandemic
Robert Williams, professor of Food Science and Technology, goes over the best practices for staying safe at the grocery store during the Covid-19 pandemic.
[00:00:00] >> When running essential errands like going to the grocery store we want to follow the principles that we've learned about preventing transmission of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, the one that causes Covid-19 illness. So that's maintaining a social distance wearing a face covering practicing very good hand hygiene and making sure that any surfaces we touch before we wash or sanitize our hands again that we don't also then touch our face with our hands. [00:00:21] Before you enter a grocery store have a plan, make sure that you're not going to spend extra time there at the store know what you want to purchase plan out in your mind where it is in the store grab those items and then get out of the store as soon as possible. [00:00:33] So we're not concerned about foods themselves necessarily being much of a risk for transmitting the virus we're more concerned about some of the ideas that people have put out on the Internet such as washing fruits and vegetables in soap or bleach solutions, that's unnecessary, first of all, and second of all it can result in the person being ill from consuming soap or bleach residues, just use cold running water and then follow up with a paper towel to dry the fruit or vegetable before you consume it.
