The Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine held the first ever "Puppy Palooza" for students to get hands-on experience handling puppies and working with breeders. Students performed physical examinations and vaccinations on Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, and Australian Shepherd puppies.
[00:00:02] >> Puppy Palooza has pretty much been the best day ever. We had about 50 puppies from different breeders around the local area come to have the vet students learn about first puppy exams, how to vaccinate puppies and do general puppy wellness. It's been a great experience for the students and even as a doctor. [00:00:24] Who doesn't love snuggling with cute puppies? We've been vaccinating them so they're getting their first set of puppy vaccines and we're also giving them their first set of deworm- like heartworm preventative and dewormers and things today as well. This is beneficial for the puppies and the students because it gives them real world experience. [00:00:42] They're learning about these things in their didactic lectures but they don't get to always to see these puppies go from their breeders homes. They get to see them once they've gone to their forever home. So it gives them the good physical exam skills they're going to need but as an added benefit they get to interact with the breeders and the responsible breeders that we have through our program.
