Scam alert: COVID-19 vaccination validation email

From: Virginia Tech Police Department

The Virginia Tech Police Department is aware of an email scam circulating across Southwest Virginia in which the sender is purporting to be Virginia Department of Health (VDH) within the email “from” line and through the use of the VDH logo within the body of the email. The email address is not an official VDH email address. The sender claims the department is requiring immediate validation of the recipient’s COVID-19 status by clicking a link.

The public is reminded:

  • Do not click any suspicious links from emails where you do not know the sender.
  • Always double-check the email address associated with the “from” line in an email before replying.
  • University community members should report all crimes and suspicious activity/persons or over the phone, text, or email, immediately to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-382-4343 or by dialing 911. Anonymous tips can be reported online or via the Hokie Ready app.
