Guide to computing support and services from the Division of IT

From: Division of Information Technology

The Division of Information Technology supports the technology needs of students, faculty, and staff at Virginia Tech. This quick guide is designed to help new and returning Hokies get to know the services and resources we offer, as well as how to access them.

4Help IT Support

When you have a technology question or need help with a computer issue, go to 4Help first. To get help, submit a ticket through the 4Help.vt.edu portal, or call 540-231-4357 to speak to a  4Help IT consultant. Additionally, 4Help’s extensive Knowledge Base contains information and how-tos covering almost every technology product and service offered at Virginia Tech. The 4Help page also shows the current status of all enterprise IT services at Virginia Tech, and makes it easy to learn more about service outages or system maintenance.

OneCampus

OneCampus, at onecampus.vt.edu, is a comprehensive dashboard providing quick access to online services and resources across Virginia Tech. Students, employees, and even parents can use OneCampus to connect to everything from Canvas to parking services; from leave reports to paystub information; from family weekend information to the academic calendar; and much more. Current students and employees can add frequently-visited sites and services to their “favorites'' to show up at the top of the list on their OneCampus dashboard.

Hokie SPA

Hokie SPA (“spa” stands for “student personal access”) is a self-service portal through which students can access course registration, Hokie Passport services, Hokie Wallet, financial aid information, and other services. A related portal, Hokie PLUS (“personal look up system”), allows students and employees to manage contact information, chosen names, pronouns, and other personal information. Employees can also access W-2s, paystubs, and other personal information through the Hokie Team portion of the self-service portal.

IT Service Catalog

Also located at 4help.vt.edu, the IT Service Catalog is where to go to request technology services including software and hardware, cybersecurity training, high-performance computing consultations, captioning services, and more. Requests can be made using customized forms that ensure requests go to the right person or office for fulfillment.

Software Service Center

The Software Service Center provides software support and information about required software for students, currently available departmental software for purchase or download, and the Network Software Server, which provides users with a list of their own software purchases as well as software currently available for download from the Software Service Center.

Users can also get information about software, make purchase requests, and access common software tools through the IT Service Catalog.

Accessible Technologies

Accessible Technologies, a group within Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS), provides a collection of services and software to the Virginia Tech community to help everyone create learning environments and workspaces that are welcoming and accessible. Hokies who share a vision for enhancing digital accessibility across campus can join the Accessibility Network.

The TLOS Professional Development Network

The TLOS Professional Development Network, or PDN, offers free training for faculty, staff, and graduate students. Courses cover topics such as research applications, inclusive course design, and cybersecurity, as well as software tools including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Canvas, Zoom, and more. Course formats include self-paced learning, online group sessions, in-person seminars, and hybrid sessions.

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning offers more than 17,000 on-demand courses and learning paths designed to help users gain new skills and knowledge. Access is free for current Virginia Tech students and employees when they log in at linkedinlearning.vt.edu using their VT username and passphrase. TLOS is the service provider for LinkedIn Learning at Virginia Tech. For assistance, contact 4Help.vt.edu.

Telecommunications Training and Services

The Division of IT’s Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S) unit provides the university’s data, voice, and video networks and related services. They offer training on how to use university phones and headsets, as well as direct customer support through 4Help. Departments can also order services from NI&S using their customer portal.

We wish all Hokies a happy, healthy, and successful semester — if you have questions or need technology help, you know what to do: submit a ticket at 4help.vt.edu or call 4Help IT Support at 540-231-4357.
