New archive folder in Outlook provides additional email storage

As of Sept. 1, 2021, Collaborative Computing Solutions (CCS) has enabled the Exchange Online Archiving feature within Virginia Tech's Microsoft 365 environment. This feature provides each user with a new cloud-based archive folder in Outlook, which contains an additional 100 gigabytes (GB) of storage.

The new folder, located alongside a user's primary mailbox folders, is named "Online Archive - [user last name, first name]" in the Outlook desktop client, and "In-Place Archive - [user last name, first name]" in Outlook on the web. Users can access, store, and search for items in this cloud-based archive folder just as with their other mailbox folders.

This new feature also contains auto-expanding archiving. Each time a user's archive folder reaches 100 GB, an additional archive folder is created, providing an additional 100 GB of storage space. This feature allows the archive mailbox to grow as their inbox grows.

No action is required to begin using this feature; however, users have the option to set their retention policy to archive messages after a certain amount of time.
