Employees encouraged to live Ut Prosim motto

From: Human Resources

All members of our university community have the opportunity to show our broader communities Virginia Tech’s commitment to teaching and learning, research, and outreach to the Commonwealth of Virginia, the nation, and the world community as outlined in our Principles of Community. One way we do that is through community service, a powerful and direct manifestation of our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

As we get ready to mark our university’s progress toward embracing an inclusive environment next week during Principles of Community week, Human Resources encourages employees to participate in this reflective time and look for opportunities to influence both our university and our communities through service.

Supervisors are encouraged to support employees in their desire and effort to serve communities.

As a reminder, staff employees receive community service time as part of their leave plan and have to obtain prior approval for service leave. Faculty members are exempt employees and should work with their supervisor on how to schedule time for community service.

If you or your supervisor have questions about how community service leave should be applied, for staff, or scheduled, for faculty, the Leave Team is here to help. Send your questions to the Leave Team at
