Hokie Health: Mindfulness improves your well-being now and in the future

Mental health is health. And we believe that when it comes to mental health, at Virginia Tech we are Better Together.

From: Hokie Wellness

Mindfulness is the act of being in the present moment, paying attention to what is happening around us right now. Instead of worrying about the future or reliving the past, it is the ability to keep our attention focused on the moment at hand.

Scientific evidence has shown that practicing mindfulness can have a positive effect on life. It can improve the ability to focus, help manage emotions in difficult situations, reduce stress, and increase the capacity to experience emotions such as compassion, gratitude, contentment, and awe.

Mindfulness is not a religion. It is not a cure-all for problems and suffering, but it can lessen how disruptive those moments in our life can be.

Living a mindful life is a skill, not an inborn talent. Meditation is the tool used to achieve mindfulness, an exercise for the brain.

The Koru Mindfulness program provides the knowledge and meditation tools needed to live a mindful life. The four-week program offers a variety of meditations that will help focus and calm the mind, train your attention, and enrich your life.

Hokie Wellness is offering Koru Basic on Wednesdays beginning March 24 – April 14 from 4 – 5:15 p.m. Registration is required. For those who have completed the Koru Basic program, Koru 2.0 will be offered on Wednesdays, April 7 – April 21, from 8 – 9:15 a.m. Registration is required.
