Hokie Health: Improve your well-being by practicing gratitude

Gratitude is defined as “the quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness." We often think of gratitude as a thing that we do, and it certainly can be. However, on a deeper level, gratitude is an internal state of being, cultivated by consistent practice. Living life with a foundational perspective of gratitude can transform us from the inside out.

Many studies have found that practicing gratitude regularly may offer a variety of well-being benefits including better sleep, increased engagement and satisfaction in the workplace, and stress reduction. It may also strengthen the neural pathways responsible for the release of serotonin and dopamine, two crucial neurotransmitters that regulate our emotions. 

Hokie Wellness is excited to help employees find ways to practice gratitude as the fall semester begins. Employees are invited to visit the Hokie Wellness table outside the front entrance of the North End Center on Tuesday, Aug. 10, between 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., to receive a free gratitude postcard kit. Postcards can be used to write notes of appreciation to colleagues, friends, family, and others. 

Postcard kits are first come, first serve. Additional outreach locations and dates will be announced as they are scheduled.
