Hokie Health: Participate in a new '10 at 10' Hokie Wellness program

In our busy, fast-paced society, many people are all too familiar with the experience of powering through a full workday without stopping to take a break or working through lunch, all in the pursuit of productivity. However, rarely stepping away to give our brains a pause may be doing more harm than good. Over time, these habits may lead to mental fatigue, burnout, and negative effects on physical health.

Taking brief “brain breaks” throughout the workday can be profoundly beneficial to well-being, productivity, engagement, and the capacity for creativity. Employees who prioritize these short periods of mental rest may also see improvements in inattentiveness, energy levels, and mood. In general, many people find noticeable benefits from taking a two to three-minute break every 30 minutes or a five-minute break each hour. 

A brain break might look like a short walk around the building, a five-minute stretch, a brief meditation, deep breathing, or anything else that allows the brain to “unplug” from a task for a few moments. 

Hokie Wellness is excited to announce a new virtual “10 at 10” program, which will kick off Aug. 3, from 10-10:10 a.m. This program, designed to serve as a quick and lighthearted brain break for employees and students, will be held each Tuesday and Friday, at 10 a.m., during the month of August. Participants are invited to use this Zoom link to join; no registration is required. 

“10 at 10” topics for the month of August include stretching, chair yoga, gratitude writing, coloring, mindfulness meditation, and more.
