Participate in national Race to Zero Waste recycling challenge

From: The Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities

Between Jan. 29 and March 25, Virginia Tech will be competing with schools across the United States and Canada to reduce waste, increase recycling, and raise awareness of conservation efforts through the friendly competition, Race to Zero Waste (formerly Recyclemania).

Virginia Tech's Climate Action Commitment establishes a goal of becoming a zero waste campus by 2030. The waste management industry defines this as keeping at least 90% of solid waste out of the landfill. In 2021, Virginia Tech reported a 78% waste diversion rate, demonstrating that Hokies are already working together to achieve this goal.

All students, faculty, and staff can help Virginia Tech reach the zero waste campus goal by participating in this year’s Race to Zero Waste challenge.

  • Learn what can be recycled and put recyclables in recycling bins around campus
  • Drop off plastic bags at Squires Student Center, Cheatham Hall, McComas Hall, and Holden Hall
  • Switch to reusable products, such as reusable water bottles, coffee mugs, silverware, and cloth napkins
  • Keep an eye on the Office of Sustainability’s Instagram account - @VTSustainable - to track Virginia Tech's progress in the Race to Zero Waste challenge and get involved

More information about recycling at Virginia Tech is available online.
