Each summer, abandoned bicycles left on campus are removed to ensure that ample bike parking is available for cyclists who need it. This process also helps reduce bicycle vandalism and theft.

To make sure your bicycle is not accidentally impounded, please pay attention to the signs on the bike racks. Bicycles parked at bike racks with a yellow sign will be cleared beginning either May 13 or May 20. Please park your bicycle at a rack that is not scheduled to be cleared during the given week. At least one rack at every building will have a sign with the May 20 date to ensure cyclists still have a place to park their bicycles.

For students interested in storing their bikes in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech Sustainable Transportation offers summer bike storage. Students can pay to store their bikes on campus at the Hokie Bike Hub (inside the Perry Street Parking Garage at 1330 Perry Street) until they return for the fall semester.

Summer bike storage permits are available for purchase through the Parking Services permit portal at a cost of $30. This option is less expensive and easier than retrieving a bike from impoundment, which costs $35 plus the cost of a new lock. To purchase the permit, click on the link above and select 'Get Permits'. Login with your PID, select the Bike Storage Permit, and follow the prompts to finalize payment.

After purchasing a permit, students should contact Sustainable Transportation at gettingaround@vt.edu to coordinate storage at the Hokie Bike Hub.

By providing this option for students, the Sustainable Transportation Department hopes to reduce the number of bike impoundments and provide students with peace of mind knowing that their bike is being safely stored.

For more information or for any questions, please contact Sustainable Transportation at gettingaround@vt.edu or 540-231-2116.
