Navigating pathways in the North Academic District during construction

To accommodate capital construction and maintenance efforts in the North Academic District including:
- Hitt Hall
- Multi-Modal Transit Facility
- Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building
- The pair of elevator towers in priority one of the series of mobility and accessibility capital projects underway
- Pathway enhancement near Hancock and Bishop-Favrao Halls
Pedestrians should exercise caution and follow posted directional signage when navigating the area. Additionally, cyclists should only lock bicycles to designated bike racks.
Delivery and emergency vehicle access through Perry Street will be available via the West Campus Drive entrance and the Stanger and Barger Street entrances.
Please note that due to the evolving nature of these projects, accessible and pedestrian pathways as well as emergency and delivery vehicle access are subject to change. Changes in routes will be communicated via Virginia Tech News, the interactive campus and campus closures maps, Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities X, formerly known as Twitter, account, and directional signage.

Dec. 7 - March 15: Hancock, Bishop-Favrao Halls sidewalk improvements
To accommodate ADA pathway enhancement work occurring in the North Academic District, the sidewalk on the north side of Hancock down to Perry Street/Multi-Modal Transit Facility sidewalk will be closed, as well as the mulch pathway from the plaza on east side of Bishop-Favrao Hall that connects back to sidewalk directly to north of Cowgill Hall from approximately Thursday, Dec. 7 - Friday, March 15.
During this time, pedestrians are encouraged to utilize nearby alternative sidewalks for navigation.
From approximately Jan. 4 - 15, a portion of the sidewalk along the north side of Hancock Hall will also be closed. Alternative pedestrian routes will be available around Cowgill Hall or along Perry Street.
Entrances to Hancock and Whittemore Halls will not be impacted.
Dec. 16 - Jan. 16: Hitt Hall sidewalk improvements
To accommodate sidewalk improvement efforts related to the Hitt Hall capital construction project, from approximately Saturday, Dec. 16 - Tuesday, Jan. 16, the sidewalk on the east side of the New Classroom Building (opposite of West Campus Drive) and the sidewalk on the west side of Bishop-Favrao Hall (closest to Hitt Hall) will be closed.
During this time, pedestrians are encouraged to utilize alternative pathways along West Campus Drive and around Derring Hall and accessible routes along/through Derring Hall and near Whittemore Hall.
During improvement work, the east entrance of New Classroom Building and the west entrance of Bishop-Favrao Hall will be limited to emergency exits only. Pedestrians should plan to utilize the west entrance of New Classroom Building and the loading dock or second floor east entrance of Bishop-Favrao Hall.
Dec. 18 - Dec. 20: Elevator tower planned demolition
To accommodate capital construction efforts on a pair of elevator towers in a series of mobility and accessibility improvements occurring in the North Academic District, from Monday, Dec. 18 - Wednesday, Dec. 20, pedestrian access to the Johnston Student Center's half of the Cowgill Stairs will be closed, including the top, eastern half of the steps from the center rail to where the tower is being built.
Pedestrians will be able to utilize the western half of the steps (near Cowgill Plaza). Pedestrians should exercise caution, as there will be a limited series of plywood boards in use to protect drains on the ground. Signage will be posted around these boards to assist with navigation.
During this time, planned demolition will take place. The university community may notice elevated levels of noise emanating from the area.
Dec. 18 - Jan. 16: Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building gas service installation
To accommodate gas service installation efforts for the Undergraduate Science Laboratory Building capital construction project, beginning Monday, Dec. 18, a limited portion of Perry Street (near the New Classroom Building) will be closed to pedestrians.
Installation work may take several weeks to complete. The pathway is targeted for reopening prior to the beginning of the spring semester on Tuesday, Jan. 16.
Directional signage will be posted to assist with navigation.
