Virginia Retirement System members advised to be aware of unsolicited retirement counseling offers

From time to time, Virginia Retirement System (VRS) receives reports from members and employers that various companies or groups have contacted them via email or phone to offer retirement counseling services.

Several members have recently reported being contacted by “VRS Support.” “VRS Support” is not affiliated with the Virginia Retirement System and is not a state agency.

Employees are reminded that VRS does not use unsolicited calls or email to contact members to offer its services and that VRS staff do not come to members’ homes to discuss benefits.

All correspondence from VRS are sent by United States mail on official letterhead.

Employees should use caution in responding to unsolicited offers of retirement planning or advice.

VRS offers retirement planning sessions throughout the state at colleges, universities, other public locations, and the VRS office in Richmond. Members also can use their myVRS account to create benefit estimates, review their VRS benefits and plan for retirement.

The Department of Human Resources also provides additional resources to ensure employees are well-prepared for retirement.
