Hokie Wellness offers a range of programs during April. They include:

TimelyCare Information Session: TimelyCare is a virtual health mental wellness service available to full-time faculty and staff and non-student wage employees at no cost. Employees can access TimelyCare services regardless of their location in the United States. In this session, employees will learn more about the three free services offered by TimelyCare: individual counseling sessions, TalkNow on-demand mental health support, and health coaching.

Mental Health First Aid: Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or substance use disorder. Some of the topics covered include depression, anxiety disorder, and substance use disorders. Each seat is paid for by the university and consists of pre-training, participant manuals, processing guides, and a three-year certification. Space is limited.

April 6, 8:30-9:30 a.m.: Koru Basic: Koru Basic Mindfulness is an introductory class that will teach you the skill of mindfulness. It will also help you build the habit of using it in your life on a regular basis. We’ve found that folks get a lot more out of Koru if they stick with it from beginning to end, therefore attendance at all sessions of this virtual program is required. Please double-check your calendar and then sign up.

April 11, 12:30-1:30 p.m.: Brain Health Workshop: Almost half of us will experience some form of memory decline in older age. This virtual workshop, hosted by Hannah Benz from the Engagement Center for Creative Aging, compares normal age-related cognitive decline to dementia and mild cognitive impairment and introduces evidence-based lifestyle strategies that improve cognitive functioning at any age and delay the onset of memory-related impairments in older age. From building a memory toolbox to getting good sleep, meditating, eating well, and exercising mind and body, these helpful practices are easy to incorporate in everyday life. Space is limited and registration is required.

April 12, 12-1 p.m.: Wednesday Walk and Talk with Amy Sebring: Join Amy Sebring, Virginia Tech’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, for a campus walk. Sebring is responsible for the leadership and coordination of the major administrative functions that support the university’s academic, research, and service missions. The group will meet at the bottom of the stairs in front of Burruss Hall and begin walking at noon. No registration is required.

April 27, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Living Well with Essential Oils: Have you walked through the woods and smelled the trees or rubbed an herb between your fingers? What you are smelling are essential oils. Ila Schepisi from the Engagement Center for Creative Aging will provide information about how essential oils can be used for overall wellness. She will discuss what’s special about essential oils, the benefits they provide, how to use them, and how to be sure your oils are quality oils. The program will be held at the Newman Library. Space is limited and registration is required.
