LumenHAUS moved off campus

From: Communications and Marketing

Virginia Tech has partnered with a local resident to move the LumenHAUS, Virginia Tech’s award-winning solar-home project, from its former location on campus near Cowgill Hall.

Purchased at an auction by a private citizen, the home was moved off campus at the end of September. The buyer will determine the home’s future location and use.

LumenHAUS earned wide acclaim, including winning the Solar Decathlon Europe and a 2012 AIA Honor Award for Architecture from the American Institute of Architects, and was displayed in Times Square in New York City in 2010.

At its April 2022 meeting, the Board of Visitors approved a resolution on the building’s disposition, noting that the house had moved beyond its useful life as an experimental and teaching structure. The clearing of the site, adjacent to ongoing construction at the Blacksburg Transit Multi-Modal Transit Facility, also supports key elements of the Campus Master Plan.
