Virginia Tech observes 32nd anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act

From: Office for Equity and Accessibility

Tuesday, July 26, marks the 32nd anniversary of the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Signed into law in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush, the landmark civil rights legislation protects equal opportunity and access for people with disabilities across areas of public life, including employment and education.

ADA and Accessibility Services in the Office for Equity and Accessibility supports the Virginia Tech community in matters of accommodation and access. Pamela Vickers, director for ADA and Accessibility Services, leads the university’s efforts to ensure institutional compliance with the ADA. Vickers provides oversight of the reasonable accommodation process for applicants, employees, and visitors; ensures that the university’s programs and services are accessible to individuals with disabilities; and consults with various stakeholders and community members on ADA-related topics, such as effective communication and accessibility.

The ADA team provides expertise regarding workplace accommodations, medical restrictions, physical accessibility, 508 compliance for digital and web-based communications, and programmatic accessibility requirements. The team also provides a range of trainings and consultations on the ADA and works with departments, programs, and colleges to develop activities and events that are fully accessible and inclusive.

Services for Students with Disabilities provides accommodations to students on a case-by-case basis. Student accommodations include note-taking assistance, the Werth Testing Center, and more.

ADA and Accessibility Services hosts an event each October to celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month and the impact of the ADA on the lives of people with disabilities. Further information on this year’s event will be provided at a later date. Learn about the national celebration at www.adaanniversary.org
