Changes announced for COVID-19 case management process

Editor’s note: This notice has been updated as of June 21 to reflect the latest university guidance.

From: Virginia Tech Emergency Management and Human Resources

Beginning June 9, Virginia Tech transitioned the COVID-19 case management process. The university will continue to provide support to employees and supervisors through Human Resources and the Environmental Health and Safety Occupational Health team. There are currently no state or university employee reporting requirements for a positive COVID-19 test. However, employees should continue to follow the standard procedures for notifying their supervisor in the event of an absence, and work with their supervisor regarding sick leave as necessary.

All Virginia Tech domestic campuses are following the guidance from the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), which updated its guidance on quarantine and isolation practices on June 16. The VDH website provides general information and calculators to be used in determining if, and for how long, one should quarantine or isolate depending upon their individual health risks and precautionary steps taken to date.

  • For specific health questions, employees should contact their primary care physician, urgent care, or their local health department.
  • For leave questions, employees should contact their Human Resources representative or the HR Service Center.
  • Employees should work with their supervisor on planning for work coverage as necessary, and should work with their supervisor to manage return to work plans.
  • For additional questions, employees can contact the EHS Occupational Health team at reportacase@vt.edu.

Testing remains available for non-symptomatic individuals throughout the summer on the Blacksburg campus.  Appointments can be scheduled through VT Notify for walk-in self-testing at Schiffert Health Center (Room 224, Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., Friday: 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.). Testing appointments can also be scheduled at certain pharmacies and urgent care facilities throughout Virginia for employees and students.

If an employee tests positive or has had an exposure to COVID-19, referring to the VDH recommendations for isolation (positive) or quarantine (exposures/close contacts) will be helpful in determining how long to stay home, how long to wear a mask when around others, and when an employee may be able to return to work. These infographics and answers to other common questions from supervisors and employees are also included in these quick reference FAQs.
