Update regarding new Commonwealth of Virginia telework policy

As a follow-up to the message published on May 6 about the Commonwealth of Virginia’s new telework policy, we have confirmed that Virginia Tech’s classified staff are the only employee group impacted by the governor’s order.

This new policy does not apply to A/P faculty and university staff, because Virginia law authorizes colleges and universities to establish and follow their own personnel policies. These employees should continue to follow the current Virginia Tech policy and procedures for flexible work options, including telework and alternate work agreements.

Virginia Tech has approximately 650 classified staff employees. Of that number, about 170 employees currently have a flexible work agreement. Human Resources is working directly with these employees and their supervisors to provide instructions and information on how to submit their telework agreement request to the commonwealth using the new state form and procedures. Classified staff agreements will be subject to review by the commonwealth. Classified staff may also choose to convert to university staff in order to remain under Virginia Tech’s policy for flexible work.
