With recent FDA approval, students and employees are encouraged to receive COVID-19 vaccination booster shot

From: University Relations

Nov. 19, 2021 update: The Food and Drug Administration announced that all individuals aged 18 and older are eligible to receive a single booster dose of their choosing. Read the complete announcement.

“The FDA has determined that the currently available data support expanding the eligibility of a single booster dose of the Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines to individuals 18 years of age and older,” said Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. “Streamlining the eligibility criteria and making booster doses available to all individuals 18 years of age and older will also help to eliminate confusion about who may receive a booster dose and ensure booster doses are available to all who may need one.”

Virginia Tech encourages all students and employees to receive a booster shot. To get a vaccine, people can go to one of the Health Department sites listed, visit a local pharmacy, or find a vaccine through vaccinefinder.gov. You may also call 1-877-VAX-IN-VA (877-829-4682).

In addition, the Virginia Department of Health has opened a Community Vaccination Center in Roanoke at the old Sears store in Valley View Mall. All COVID vaccines and boosters are available. Appointments are available Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Visit vaccinate.virginia.gov or call 877-VAX-IN-VA (877-829-4682) for an appointment. Although appointments are encouraged, walk-ins will also be accepted.

Please consider getting your annual flu vaccine when you get your booster shot.

While the New River Health District has not announced plans for large events for vaccinations or boosters, any future announcements will be published on the university's Ready site and distributed through the Daily and Student Email editions.
