Expiration of Public Health Emergency Leave (PHEL)

Virginia Tech was notified on July 9 by the Commonwealth of Virginia that the Public Health Emergency Leave (PHEL) expired on June 30, 2021. PHEL was a leave benefit activated during the pandemic due to the Public Health Emergency declaration, which also expired June 30, 2021. Because Virginia Tech was notified on July 9, which coincides with the end of the most recent leave period, all approved leave time recorded as PHEL will be honored.

Starting July 10, 2021, employees who are ineligible for remote work and who must quarantine due to known exposure to COVID-19 must use their available personal, annual, or compensatory leave to cover the absence. Any remaining PHEL balances will be removed from the Leave and Time Worked Recording System effective July 10, 2021 to coincide with the begin date of the current leave period.

Any employee who tests positive for the COVID-19 virus and becomes symptomatic or ill should use sick leave or other available personal leave and, if necessary and eligible, file a short-term disability claim.
