Nominations being accepted for the role of Faculty Athletics Representative

From: Office of the President

The Office of the President is accepting nominations for the position of Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR).

The FAR serves as the Senior Faculty Advisor on athletics to the President of Virginia Tech. The FAR acts as a liaison between the faculty, administration, and athletics program, providing periodic reports to the University Athletics Committee regarding academic matters, the performance of student-athletes, and NCAA legislation/policies, and other matters related to the athletics program.

The FAR represents Virginia Tech and its faculty in the university’s relationship with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The FAR represents Virginia Tech as the voting delegate to the annual NCAA convention and other NCAA or ACC meetings and serves on NCAA councils, cabinets, and committees as appointed. The FAR helps interpret NCAA and ACC legislation and policies and is empowered to prepare any requests for waivers or appeals on behalf of the university.

The FAR represents the faculty in supporting the academic well-being of student-athletes, with the responsibility to ensure, either directly or indirectly, that student-athletes meet all NCAA, conference, and VT requirements for eligibility to practice, financial aid, and intercollegiate competition. The FAR also monitors the student-athlete experience, providing insight into student perceptions of the athletics program.

The FAR works with the Director of Athletics and other athletics staff to educate student-athletes about NCAA rules and compliance programs within the athletics department. Typical activities include coordinating the nominations process for NCAA and ACC honors and postgraduate scholarships, administering the coaches’ rules examination and NCAA student surveys, and attending departmental senior staff and coaches’ meetings with the Virginia Tech Athletics Compliance Office.

The FAR is appointed by the University President for a five-year term commencing August 10, 2021. The term is eligible for reappointment for a second five-year term.  Nominations, including self-nominations, are open to any tenure/tenure track faculty member at Virginia Tech who has been employed by the university for a minimum of five years.  An understanding of university athletics and the role of a student-athlete is preferred.
