Reminder: 2021 faculty and staff salary and merit increases approved by Board of Visitors
From: Human Resources and Provost Office
Consistent with the approved state budget for 2021-22, Virginia Tech allocated a 5 percent pool to increase the compensation of our valued employees.
Virginia Tech’s compensation program was approved by the Board of Visitors during this week’s meeting. Following their approval, earned increases for calendar year faculty and university and classified staff are effective June 10, 2021 and employees will see any increase in their July 1, 2021 paycheck. Academic year faculty earned increases are effective August 10, 2021 and employees will see any increase in their September 1, 2021 paycheck.
To be eligible for a salary increase, all salaried staff must have been hired before March 11, 2021 and have at least an “acceptable/developing” performance level on their most recent evaluation. University staff merit increases were based upon a review of performance evaluations. Faculty must have been hired before December 11, 2020 to be eligible, and merit increases were informed based on the content of their Faculty Activity Report. Eligible classified staff received a base salary increase of 5 percent as these positions are governed by the state. See the table below for additional information on how Virginia Tech’s salary and merit program was implemented.

We appreciate the recognition by lawmakers that a talented workforce must be competitively compensated. These increases are critical to continuing the university’s efforts to reward the hard work of university employees across campus and recruit and retain talented employees to Virginia Tech.
