    Cochrane will retire from Virginia Tech on July 1. He has served the university over 55 years as an undergraduate in the Corps of Cadets, a cadet leader in the U.S. Army, a campus administrator, and as a sustainability champion.

    Hokies everywhere will pause today to remember the 32 students and faculty members who were tragically taken from their loved ones and our community on April 16, 2007. Virginia Tech will alter its 2021 Day of Remembrance events to promote physical distancing and discourage large public gatherings. The 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance will be offered as a virtual event this year. Hokies can run, walk, or jog on their own and post a picture online using #VT32Run. See a full list of events at the We Remember site.

On the Day of Remembrance, Friday, April 16, all members of the Virginia Tech community will be encouraged to pause and honor the 32 individuals who lost their lives on April 16, 2007, in a manner most meaningful to you.

Through efforts to encourage social distancing, participants ran and walked far more than the 32,000-mile goal to honor the 32 lives lost on April 16, 2007. According to the Stridekick app, which was used to track the virtual run, participants logged more than 80,000 virtual miles.

    Day of Remembrance activities limited for 2020 commemoration , article

    On April 16, 2020, the Ceremonial Candle at the April 16 Memorial will burn for 24 hours, but there will not be a public ceremony at midnight and 11:59 p.m. as has been our tradition. Flowers and wreaths will be placed at the memorial and the Carillon Bells will be rung 32 times at 9:43 a.m. on that day. All other gatherings traditionally held on that day will not take place.

    Stamps scholarships expanding to offer more opportunities at Honors College , article

    Since partnering with the university, five Stamps Scholarships have been available each year, resulting in Virginia Tech having a total of 19 Stamps Scholars, eight of whom have graduated. Beginning in the fall 2020, 10 Stamps Scholarships will be available each year.

    Tom Brown honored with emeritus status , article

    As dean of students, Brown led new student orientation programs, family programming, sexual assault education, and multicultural and international programs. He also provided great care and compassion to many Hokies and their families following April 16, 2007.
