    TurboLab team is developing laser-based diagnostics , video

    Graduate student Sean Powers, Research Scientist Gwi Bo Byun and a team at Virginia Tech’s TurboLab have designed and built a custom inlet (air intake) to be mounted onto the front of a Honeywell TFE-731-2 turbofan engine. Additionally, they are developing laser-based diagnostics that can be a non-intrusive way to measure the same things that the intrusive probes are measuring, such as temperature and sound levels.

    Graduate Students attend Virginia Tech's first ComSciCon , video

    The inaugural Communicating Science Conference, better known as ComSciCon, kicked off at the Lyric Theatre in Blacksburg. The two day event had Virginia Tech graduate students attending work shops at the Graduate Life Center designed to give them better tools in communicating their prospective sciences. Allison Hutchison, the Organizing Committee Chair, says the importance of communicating effectively is vital to better comprehension of the great work done at Virginia Tech.

    Workshop addresses oral history methodology , video

    The Virginia Tech Center for Rhetoric in Society has received a grant from Voice of Witness, a nonprofit that sponsors oral history projects examining human rights and social justice. As part of the grant, the center sponsored training workshops in oral history methodology for Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate students; Voice of Witness education director Cliff Mayotte and managing editor Dao Tran led the workshops. Workshop participants are now qualified to work with a Voice of Witness oral history project, “Resettled: Beginning (Again) in Appalachia,” for which Katrina Powell, an English professor who directs the Center for Rhetoric in Society, serves as editor. Participants are also trained to work with another center initiative: VT Stories, a collaborative oral history project aimed at capturing a broader and more inclusive history of the university through interviews with Virginia Tech alumni, students, faculty, and staff.
