VT SURE - a scalable, secure environment for research data is in development

Note revised timeline, options for engagement

A partnership between the Office of Research and Innovation and the Division of Information Technology will give Virginia Tech researchers an accessible, scalable, supported space in the cloud for storing and sharing sensitive research data. The new cloud research data platform, called VT SURE - the Virginia Tech Secure University Research Environment, will balance security and compliance with user-friendly features that enable collaboration.

This cloud-based storage and analysis environment is being developed with researchers’ needs for customization at the forefront, while also meeting sponsor requirements for data security. With flexible and scalable spaces for storage and analysis of data, an intuitive user interface, robust support, and governance protocols to enable secure collaboration both within and beyond the university, the new infrastructure will advance scholarship and research capabilities for projects in all disciplines.

Over the summer of 2022, the project underwent a change in leadership that called for a revision of project timelines. Project managers are expanding their work to clarify the scope of the platform, ensuring that it will meet researchers' needs for scalability and protection of PII (personally identifiable information), PHI (protected health information), and other sensitive data types. Development of the pilot version of VT SURE is continuing this fall, and will include testing of the platform by a group of interested researchers.
