New e-book helps consumers select decorative, pollinator shrubs for Virginia landscapes
Virginia Cooperative Extension recently released a new e-book, “Selecting Plants for Virginia Landscapes: Showy Flowering Shrubs,” to provide home and landowners options for planting small, medium, and large shrubs with showy flowers in Virginia and the mid-Atlantic states.
The publication can be accessed via Kindle, Nook, Sony Reader, and Apple hand-held devices and serves as a guide to consumers who want to create a habitat that promotes pollination by insects via flowering shrubs.
E-books are a dynamic medium that preserves the layout of publications. They also allow visually impaired individuals the ability to access Extension publications through the use of screen readers that can translate text into braille and a computerized voice. E-books are easily shared with others, can have bookmarks placed in them, and readers can tailor the font size to their individual needs.
This publication adds to the growing library of e-books that can be found on the Extension website. More than 1.9 million users visited the Extension publication website last year, and more than 10,000 e-books have been downloaded. E-books are peer-reviewed publications.
“The e-books reflect our commitment to reach larger and more diverse audiences,” said Ed Jones, director of Extension and associate dean in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “These e-books provide another valuable tool for putting knowledge into the hands of the people.”
