Darya Nesterova receives 2014 College of Science Outstanding Senior Award
Darya Nesterova of Fairfax, Va., has received Virginia Tech’s 2014 College of Science Outstanding Senior Award.
Sponsored by the Virginia Tech Alumni Association and the senior class, the Outstanding Senior Award recognizes exceptional academic achievement and leadership by a graduating senior from each of the university’s eight colleges. Recipients have a minimum grade point average of 3.75 on a 4.0 scale and are selected by faculty and students within the respective colleges.
Nesterova will receive her Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences with minors in psychology and medicine and society during the University Commencement ceremony to be held Friday, May 16, in Lane Stadium.
A dean’s list student and participant in the University Honors program, Nesterova is a Presidential Global Scholar studying at the Center for European Studies and Architecture this spring.
She is the recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, including the Jerry and Leslie Gough Honors Scholarship, College of Science Deans Roundtable Award, Honors Alumni Presidential Scholarship, and the Virginia Tech Pamplin Leader Award. She has been inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.
Nesterova has engaged in undergraduate research projects for several semesters and served as the team leader for the Regional iGEM Team in 2010. She is a chapter member of the American Medical Student Association where she has served as president and currently holds a national position with that organization.
In addition to her academic pursuits, she participated in a medical service trip to Lima, Peru; she is a volunteer at Carilion New River Valley Hospice; and is an active member of the Virginia Tech AMSA volunteer committee.
In recognition of her academic achievements, leadership, service, and commitment to the university, Nesterova was selected as Virginia Tech’s 2013 Undergraduate Woman of the Year.
