Representatives from Ernst & Young will host a workshop, “The Importance of Diversity Education in the Workplace,” on Friday, Sept. 16, 10 a.m. – noon, at The Inn at Virginia Tech.

The workshop, organized by the Business Diversity Center and Department of Management of the Pamplin College of Business, is free and open to all Virginia Tech faculty and staff.

“Hear from leaders of a major employer of Virginia Tech students as they discuss the role of diversity and diversity education in their company,” said Nichole Phillips, management assistant professor and associate director of Pamplin's Business Diversity Center.

The workshop’s goal, she said, is to inform faculty and staff of the importance of diversity education in coursework, advising, career training and preparation, and other aspects of the university experience to ensure that students are competitive in their job search. “We will also discuss how diversity education can be incorporated into the various roles of faculty and staff.”

Topics addressed will include the diversity-related competencies Ernst & Young seeks when recruiting employees, the speakers’ individual experiences related to diversity in their positions, and the ways in which Virginia Tech alumni working at Ernst & Young have been able to use their competencies in the hiring process and their careers.

Ernst & Young’s workshop leaders will include Fran Randall, international tax senior manager; Andre Crawford, tax manager; and Ashley Perry, assurance staff member.

Lunch will be provided. Registration is required as space is limited. Phillips noted that 65 people have already registered for the workshop. Registration will close on Monday, Sept. 12.
