University marks Juneteenth as official holiday , articleVirginia Tech’s Office for Inclusion and Diversity, in partnership with Solitude, will start a new Juneteenth tradition by inviting cultures from around the world to take their wishes, hopes, and prayers written on ribbons or paper, and tie them to a tree. The event will be held on June 19 this year and begin at 9 a.m.

Video ItemWork begins to memorialize the historic Merry Oak tree , video
According to Virginia Tech University Arborist Jamie King, the Merry Oak tree is centuries old and even predates the university itself. The tree was brought down due to a storm on May of 2020. Facilities workers came out on a cold wet morning to load the remains of the tree and transport it to Floyd, Virginia. The wood will be milled and given to an artist to repurpose for future Hokies to rediscover its past.

After more than 150 years, Thomas Fraction receives honorable discharge from U.S. Army , articleMembers of Virginia Tech’s Black Cadet Organization presented a certificate of honorable discharge to the descendants of Thomas Fraction. Earlier this year, the U.S. Army corrected Fraction's record after he had been demoted and discharged without cause from the Union Army 155 years ago.
