Campus resources for faculty, staff, and students

The following resources and links are intended to help promote our commitment to our Principles of Community. Our principles are fundamental to our commitment to create a community that nurtures learning and growth for all of its members. They express our value for human dignity, mutual respect, and understanding in the spirit of the Virginia Tech motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).

Consistent with our principles, Virginia Tech is committed to the right of each person to express thoughts and opinions freely in a climate of civility, sensitivity, and mutual respect.

Virginia Tech respects the rights of its faculty, staff, and students to use social media as a medium of self-expression and academic freedom. University social media account guidelines are available to provide guidance for social media use. Consistent with the Faculty Handbook, Virginia Tech faculty who speak or act as private persons should avoid the impression of speaking or acting for Virginia Tech and personal use of social media should be distinct from university use.

Resources that could be very useful in navigating complex environments include our conduct guidelines in the Hokie Handbook, Faculty Handbook, and staff handbook. Our Principles of Community encourage each of us to take individual and collective responsibility for helping to eliminate bias and discrimination. In addition, our principles reject all forms of prejudice and discrimination, including those based on age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, political affiliation, race, religion, sexual orientation, and veteran status.

The following resources are available to members of the community to discuss concerns related to the Principles of Community:

Undergraduate students: Dean of students or the department head of their major area of study.

Graduate students: Graduate School ombudsperson or the department head of their major area of study.

Faculty and staff: Director of Employee Relations Rodney Irvin or their department head.

External community and media: University spokesperson Tracy Vosburgh, senior associate vice president. As a reminder, VT News is the official record for the university and notices are sent out through the daily email. The official social media sites carry messages that represent the university.
