Virginia Tech recognizes employees for 15,975 years of combined service
Virginia Tech recognized more than 860 employees for their commitment to service and for exemplifying our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), during events that took place on April 11 and 19. Collectively, these employees have dedicated 15,975 years of service to the university.
“It is an honor to recognize these individuals for many years of service and the milestones they have achieved,” said President Tim Sands. “Their dedication and commitment is the foundation of Virginia Tech’s success.”
“The loyalty and dedication of our employees is remarkable,” said Vice President for Human Resources Bryan Garey. “Their long-tenured service and knowledge benefits Virginia Tech every day. They are the backbone of our university.”
The service recognition program acknowledges employees' service to the university in five-year increments, beginning at 10 years. Of the employees recognized this year, 33 have served Virginia Tech for 40 years or more, representing more than 1,425 years of combined service.
Helen Williams, who passed away March 11, was recognized and honored for her 65 years of service. She served as administrative assistant for Virginia Cooperative Extension’s Amherst County office for 65 years. Ms. Williams’ supervisor, Karen Tanner, and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Dean Alan Grant, were presented with the award honoring her by Sands at a dinner on April 19.
Also at that dinner, two employees were recognized for 50 years of service: M. David Alexander from the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and Nicolaus Tideman from the College of Science.
Employees with 25 or more years of service received an etched Hokie stone, a symbol of strength and stability. The stone reflects the foundational commitment of each employee who receives one. Starting at 40 years of service, employees receive a Hokie stone personalized with their name and years of service.

The Service Recognition Program's time period is April 1 of the previous year through March 31 of the current year.
