Learn about the impact and importance of our Principles of Community

To the Virginia Tech community,

As we prepare to kick off our 2023 Principles of Community Week, we are grateful for the way these principles have kept our university grounded through the many changes and challenges we have experienced in recent years. As we take the next steps of our Beyond Boundaries journey, growing in diversity with each incoming class of new Hokies, our Principles of Community remain incredibly relevant. They serve as a continuous reminder of InclusiveVT, our institutional and individual commitment to our motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve), in the spirit of community, diversity, and excellence.

There will be workshops, events, and opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to learn about the impact and importance of our Principles of Community.

We are excited to welcome Apryl Alexander — a Virginia Tech alumna and a member of the University of North Carolina Charlotte’s Department of Public Health Sciences — who will discuss the importance of hip-hop as a form of healing. We are also looking forward to a workshop on allyship hosted by the Office for Inclusion and Diversity; a community conversation with the Council on Virginia Tech History; and a presentation about women in Uganda by Jessica R. Spence, an Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Science Fellow and a Ph.D. student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Department of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education. This is an opportunity for Hokies to express and affirm our commitment to the core values of our university. As we observe Principles of Community Week, we ask that you take time to think about this year’s theme: Moving Words to Action. What actions can you take to further strengthen and engage with our community this week, and throughout the year ahead?
