Maura Gardner has been named division director of Human Resources (HR) for the Innovation Campus and the greater Washington, D.C., metro area effective Feb. 13.

She will focus on HR processes, practices, and recruiting to support the continued development of the Innovation Campus. She will work with other HR directors, local practitioners, and leadership to build and reinforce a community of practice to support the university’s presence in the D.C. area.

Gardner has nearly 10 years of HR experience in organizational development and operations, classification and compensation, talent acquisition, employee relations, and performance evaluation. She most recently was director of advancement human resources at George Mason University. She previously worked for the U.S. Department of State in Ottawa, Canada, and the Baltimore City Public Schools.

“Maura’s extensive experience and demonstrated success make her an ideal choice as division director for the Innovation Campus and D.C. metro area,” said Bryan Garey, vice president for human resources. “We are delighted to welcome her to the Virginia Tech family.”

Gardner will report to both Ken Smith, chief operating officer for the Innovation Campus, and Curtis Mabry, assistant vice president of consulting and strategic services in Human Resources.

“I look forward to working with Maura to help build and strengthen our campus and advocate for our employees,” said Smith.

Gardner holds a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Mary Washington and a Master of Education in instructional technology from the University of Virginia.
