Dear Hokies,

I am writing to express my hearfelt concern for those affected by the devastating earthquake in Syria and Turkey. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy, including the families and friends of those who have lost their lives, and those who have been injured or displaced from their homes.

If you or someone you know is struggling with the emotional effects of this devastating natural disaster, Virginia Tech has many options for support. The Dean of Students office is ready to help, as well as staff from Cook Counseling, Cranwell International Center, and Hokie Wellness.

I also encourage the members of our community to support the relief efforts for the earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey. There are many ways in which we can help, including making donations to a reputable relief organization, offering support and comfort to those who have been impacted, and spreading awareness about the situation.

Virginia Tech’s Graduate School has also organized a relief effort and is collecting donations from now until Feb. 17. Items being collected for donation are new/gently used winter clothes for adults and children, blankets, sleeping bags, thermos bottles, flashlights, power banks, diapers, and hygiene products. To donate, visit one of these collection sites:

  • Graduate Life Center (Main Lobby)
  • ACEC at Squires Student Center (Room 140)
  • Fralin Life Sciences Institute (Steger Hall)
  • Northern Virginia Center (Room 495)

Together, we can make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by this disaster.

With hope,

S. Mark Sikes,
Dean of Students
