Steven Thompson, associate professor of architecture in the College of Architecture, Arts, and Design at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of associate professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1991, Thompson was the coordinator of the undergraduate architecture thesis year from 2000-04 and chair of the graduate program in architecture from 2004-14. In these administrative roles, he supported graduate and undergraduate education in architecture and never lost sight of the centrality of each student in the program.

Through his extensive participation in study abroad programs, studios, and required courses and seminars, Thompson encouraged students to learn outside the confines of the classroom amidst nature, cities, towns, villages, and other places.

In collaboration with Associate Professor Hunter Pittman, Thompson initiated a rammed earth design-build house construction project in Giles County in 2002 in which third-year undergraduate architecture students participated.

Thompson taught 25 different courses and worked with more than 200 students on their senior capstone architectural projects and Master of Architecture and Ph.D. students as a thesis committee chair or member.

Thompson received his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Kentucky and his Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia.
