In memoriam: Larry Smith, Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities
Larry Smith, a retired Division of Campus Planning, Infrastructure, and Facilities mechanical engineer, passed away on Oct. 2.
Smith was a friend to everyone he met.
He was born on Nov. 5, 1950, and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1973. He later joined the university as a mechanical engineer for most of his professional career.
Smith was a very respected engineer that was devoted to Virginia Tech. He worked diligently to ensure that Virginia Tech’s facilities were well maintained and operated efficiently.
He will be remembered by all who knew him as a tremendous Virginia Tech sports fan. He attended almost every football, basketball, and baseball game for decades.
Kim Briele, a retired colleague of Smith, described him as an undeniable asset to the university as an engineer, advocate, and sports fan. He was a true Hokie in every sense, Briele said. He lived the Virginia Tech motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Smith was a lifelong member of Fairview Community Church. He was an active musician and enjoyed playing with the group, Heaven Bound.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and H.M. Smith, Jr.
Smith is survived by his brother, David Smith; brother, Randy Smith and fiancé, Teresa Farley and daughter, Sydney Farley; sister, Marsha Caldwell and husband, Philip Caldwell; and special niece, Amanda Caldwell.
