Longtime State 4-H Horse Show announcer Alan Spivey passed away suddenly on Oct. 13 at age 70.

Spivey, of Aroda, Virginia, was a 4-H All Star and volunteered as an announcer at the Virginia State 4-H Horse Show for more than 50 years. He served as president and founding member of the Central Virginia Cattlemen's Association, president of Virginia Cattleman's Association, president of the Virginia Simmental Association, president of the Virginia Forage and Grasslands Council, and chairman of the Madison County Fair, according to The Daily Progress.

“Many knew Alan as the ‘voice of the State 4-H Horse Show,’” said Sandy Arnold, a Youth Animal Science extension associate. “He was an integral part of the experience for so many people and was an amazing advocate for the 4-H Horse Program. He will be greatly missed.”

Spivey gained his renowned speaking skills from being on the 4-H Horse Judging Team. He was on one of the first teams with Bob Mowrey and also judged with Arden Huff.

When not announcing the horse show, Spivey was a full-time farrier and cattleman. He also served in other roles of many councils and associations that encourage growth in agriculture and the equine industry in Virginia.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia State 4-H Horse Program. Checks can be made payable to the Virginia Tech Foundation, 902 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, VA, 24061. Please include in memory of Alan Spivey in the memo.
