Two exhibitions at the Moss Arts Center celebrate the university’s curiosity, creativity, and innovation, showcasing the work of Virginia Tech faculty members and researchers from across multiple disciplines.

Now on view, the exhibitions include both traditional and digital media, sculpture and photography, drawing and painting, and immersive video and sound installations. The featured works are created by faculty members from the School of Visual Arts, School of Performing Arts, School of Architecture + Design, and School of Plants and Environmental Sciences as well as researchers associated with the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT).

The Moss Arts Center will host a reception celebrating the exhibitions on Friday, April 15, from 5-7 p.m. in the center’s Grand Lobby, located at 190 Alumni Mall. The event is free and open to the public.

Featured in the Ruth C. Horton Gallery, Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery, and Sherwood Payne Quillen ’71 Reception Gallery, “Gathering: Faculty Triennial Exhibition” highlights new works from current faculty members. Spanning a wide variety of media, subject matter, and scale, these works and installations explore and expand upon both traditional and cutting-edge approaches to artmaking, highlighting the creativity, ingenuity, and skill of the university’s faculty.

On view until Saturday, April 30, the exhibition includes works by Betsy Bannan, Sam Blanchard, Michael Borowski, Dongsoo Choi, Meaghan Dee, Dustin Dennis, Zach Duer, Eiman Elgewely, C. Meranda Flachs-Surmanek, Emmanuel Frimpong, Jennifer Hand, Scotty Hardwig, Travis Head, Brian Holcombe, Laura Iancu, Wonjung Jung, Nate King, Wallace Lages, Amanda Lechner, Barbara Leshyn, Eugene Maurakis, Mitch Miller, Charles Nichols, Hiromi Okumura, Joy Rosenthal, Eric Standley, and Rachel Lin Weaver.

Presented in the center’s Francis T. Eck Exhibition Corridor and Miles C. Horton Jr. Gallery, “ICAT: Open (at the) Source” encourages visitors to explore and experience the research and innovation that’s happening within the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology. Visitors will become more than just viewers, but partners in exploration with the students, faculty, and staff of ICAT and its creative community.

ICAT: Open (at the) Source” presents pioneering approaches to public exhibits that use technology to deliver immersive and interactive experiences. Projects use augmented- or virtual-reality environments, allowing visitors to explore historical datasets and interact with digitized skeletons of extinct animals, while a multi-sensory art installation uses video, sound, and sculpture to explore the socioecological impacts of invasive plant species in Appalachia. A mobile spatial audio system transforms data into immersive sound. Visitors can listen to spatialized audio representations of brain activity and cybersecurity attacks. “ICAT: Open (at the) Source” is on view until Saturday, May 14.

This year, Virginia Tech marks its 150th year with an ongoing celebration of its impact and engagement. The arts are woven throughout the university's history and are a critically important part of its future. These exhibitions are part of a range of special performances, exhibitions, and experiences happening throughout the month of April that demonstrate the incredible value of the arts and creative experiences at Virginia Tech.
