Mike Walsh has been named assistant dean of advancement in the Virginia Tech College of Science, where he will lead the advancement team, which includes development, alumni relations, and communications and marketing professionals.

Walsh comes to the College of Science from North Carolina State University, where he was senior director of development for the College of Engineering. His responsibilities included managing frontline fundraisers for major gifts and leadership annual giving as well as supervising communications work. He also filled an interim role as the college's executive director of major gifts.

“Interest in scientific fields is on an impressive trajectory,” Walsh said, “and I’m delighted to join the Virginia Tech College of Science to work with students, faculty, and alumni to help make an impact in addressing the world’s greatest scientific challenges.”

Moving to Blacksburg is a bit of a homecoming for Walsh, who lived in Blacksburg for three years while earning a bachelor’s degree in geography with an emphasis in environmental studies and planning from Radford University. He later obtained a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Mansfield University in Pennsylvania.
