Virginia Tech earns best workplaces for commuters recognition in 2022
Virginia Tech has been cited as one of the 2022 Best Workplaces for Commuters in delivering top-notch commuter programs and services to students and employees.
Access to Blacksburg Transit, ride-matching services, and the Hokie Bike Hub, a self-service bike repair facility, are among the many benefits offered by the Alternative Transportation Department.
Best Workplaces for Commuters is an innovative membership program that provides qualified workplaces, universities, and sites with national recognition for providing exceptional commuter benefits.

Commuting resources
All employees and students can take advantage of the following programs and benefits.
Bike registration: All bicycles regularly parked on campus must be registered with Transportation Services. Registration is free and can be accessed through the Parking Services portal. When a bike is registered with Virginia Tech, the serial number can be cross-referenced with the bike owner’s name, and acts as independent proof of ownership. Recovered bicycles that are not registered have less chance of being returned to their rightful owners since proof of ownership is often more difficult.
Blacksburg Transit, the award-winning bus system, is free for all university members with a Hokie Passport.
RIDE Solutions is a free ride-matching and a Guaranteed Ride Home program.
The Smart Way Express bus is a free bus service between the Blacksburg campus and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute in Roanoke.
The Alternative Transportation Department continues to improve infrastructure and conditions for cyclists through a variety of efforts, including:
- Fix-It Stations – Virginia Tech has several freestanding, do-it-yourself bicycle repair stations located throughout campus. These stations offer a variety of basic bike tools and air pumps.
- Hokie Bike Hub – Free, self-service bike repair and maintenance facility for students, faculty, and staff.
Virginia Tech was named a Silver Level Bicycle Friendly University for 2019-23. This recognition from the League of American Bicyclists represents a step up from the Bronze Level designation the university received from 2013-19.

Climate Action Commitment and commuting
The Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment — the university’s guiding framework around sustainability and energy efficiency in campus operations, facilities, curriculum, and research — recognizes the many opportunities that exist in enhancing transportation programming, reducing single-occupancy vehicle commuting, and increasing employee and student participation in these efforts. The commitment lays out specific strategies for reducing transportation-related emissions by 2030 which are highlighted on pages 16-17 in the Climate Action Commitment Implementation Guidelines.
2022 Transportation Survey: Now live
Virginia Tech students and employees are encouraged to share their feedback on transportation to, from, and within the Virginia Tech Blacksburg campus in the following survey. The survey addresses the following:
- Travel to and from campus.
- Satisfaction with one’s commute.
- Experience with campus transportation programs and infrastructure.
All feedback will remain anonymous and be analyzed at the aggregate level. The survey will close on May 4 and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
