The Virginia Tech Police Department is aware of several instances of fraud involving the sale of Virginia Tech Football tickets via Facebook. Scammers are reportedly utilizing unofficial Virginia Tech groups to advertise tickets. Payment is then made using electronic payment services or apps. The Virginia Tech Police Department reminds the community to take all necessary steps to protect yourself when asked for money on any social media site from anyone.

The Virginia Tech Police Department would like to remind community members about common strategies to verify a seller's online profile:

  • Attempt to locate multiple social media accounts with photos of the same individual
  • Be aware of the user's listed location
  • Take note of the number of friends or followers the user has and whether those individuals are mutual or affiliated with Virginia Tech
  • Give attention to the user's account activity or lack thereof Pay mind to newly activated accounts - Many scammers create fake accounts quickly and delete them shortly after money is transferred

Community members should report all crimes and suspicious activity/persons anywhere on campus or over the phone, text, or email, immediately to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-382-4343 or by dialing 911.
