Today, thousands of cancer patients are now cancer survivors, thanks to a Virginia Tech researcher’s inventions.

Rafael Davalos, the L. Preston Wade Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics in the College of Engineering, is one of the inventors of therapeutic irreversible electroporation, a method of opening cancer cell pores with low-energy but high voltage electric pulses to ablate tumors . He visited Virginia Tech’s technology transfer experts in LINK+LICENSE+LAUNCH when he and his graduate students discovered new ways to enhance the technology.

“Virginia Tech’s licensing office was able to negotiate the terms and better establish relationships with the industry partners,” said Davalos of the importance of working with the team.

Davalos holds several inventions that contribute to fighting cancer that have since been licensed with the help of the LICENSE team.

Grant Brewer, executive director of LICENSE, brokered the arrangement with a company that Davalos had previously worked with, and helped improve the royalty revenue for Davalos’ electroporation technology.

In fiscal year 2021, LICENSE+LAUNCH brought 27 new intellectual property licenses, seven tech startups, and 141 invention disclosures to fruition in partnership with Virginia Tech faculty. The LINK+LICENSE+LAUNCH team works with faculty to bridge the gap between university research and industry, fostering new industry partnerships, technology commercialization, start-ups, and other types of technology transfer.

Over the fall semester, LICENSE+LAUNCH will hold weekly office hours, dedicated to the researcher who wants to learn about the process of commercializing inventions, whether through licensing or launching a startup. Virginia Tech faculty and students can stop by without an appointment. Snacks and coffee will be available.

Licensing officers at LINK+LICENSE+LAUNCH will be on hand to answer questions on topics like these:

  • Basics of patenting
  • Disclosing an invention
  • Intellectual property
  • Community initiatives
  • Startup creation and funding program

Outside the office hours, the LICENSE and LAUNCH teams are always available by email or zoom to answer questions about licensing, patenting, or launching. They also give presentations to departments about these topics.
