Dear Hokie Students,

Over the past several days we have followed news reports of recent violence in the Middle East related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. We know the loss of life has implications for many members of our Virginia Tech community and it is possible in some cases that this has directly impacted students.

Anyone directly or indirectly impacted by recent violence should know that we have offices and dedicated team members that are committed to care and support. Certainly, the Dean of Students Office and Cook Counseling Center stand ready to help students work through any challenges that arise. We also encourage you to speak with friends, dialogue with mentors, and/or seek guidance from a trusted faculty or staff member.

This past weekend an Israeli flag was stolen from the Malcolm Rosenberg Hillel Center located just off campus. A similar theft of an Israeli flag took place in the fall semester. The Blacksburg Police Department is investigating the matter. We recognize that we may not be able to fully resolve the cause of acts like these. I ask that you continue to reflect upon our Principles of Community during this time, through which “we affirm the inherent dignity and value of every person and strive to maintain a climate for work and learning based on mutual respect and understanding.”

We want to advance any effort that promotes peace, practices civility, and allows differences to thrive. Any act that crosses the threshold towards violence, intimidation, or harassment can have no place in our world or locally on our campuses.
