Matthew Mauldon, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of associate professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 2001, Mauldon’s scholarship has contributed greatly to improvements in fractured rock characterization, tunneling, and real-time mapping of engineering geologic data. His contributions to civil engineering education have included the development of civil engineering courses on the topics of engineering geology, rock mechanics, risk analysis, and natural hazards.

Mauldon has served as an editorial board member of Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering and has been an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

In the classroom, Mauldon has taught hundreds of civil engineering students in many areas of geotechnical engineering and has guided numerous graduate students through their research work.

Mauldon received his bachelor's degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
