Media Advisory: Virginia Tech experts to discuss the ripple effect on food supply during COVID-19
What: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the food industry in many ways – food supply chains have been disrupted, the foodservice industry has had to adapt or redirect, and many people are cooking at home now more than ever. As Virginia and the country begin to reopen, join Virginia Tech food science and technology experts to consider how this will affect the landscape of our lives.

Who: Virginia Tech faculty from the Department of Food Science and Technology
- Robert C. Williams, professor and extension food microbiologist in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech. He studies interventions in the food industry to prevent foodborne illness.
- Renee Boyer, professor and extension specialist in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech. She researches the safety of fresh produce and develops educational training for consumers and retail food handlers, including farmers markets.
- Melissa Chase, consumer food safety program manager in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech. She also serves as the state coordinator of the Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Food Volunteer Program.
- Joell Eifert, director of the Food Innovations Program in the Department of Food Science and Technology at Virginia Tech. The program’s main goal is to provide technical assistance for producing quality, safe, and innovative food products by increasing the awareness of matters of food safety, food regulations, and general concerns associated with food businesses.
