Ken Miller has been appointed vice president for finance at Virginia Tech effective April 25, 2020.

Miller brings more than 32 years of dedicated service to the university, unparalleled institutional knowledge, and deep financial management and accounting operations experience to the position.

Miller has served as interim vice president for finance since the retirement of Dwight Shelton in fall 2019.

In the role of vice president for finance, Miller will play a highly visible role as a strategic business partner to the senior leadership of the university, while engaging frequently with the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. Miller will be responsible for providing primary support to leadership in identifying, obtaining, and allocating the resources needed to achieve the university’s mission and long-term objectives of Virginia Tech’s strategic plan.

Miller will provide oversight over the university's accounting processes and will maintain financial relationships with the commonwealth and regulatory relationships with the state and federal governments. He will be tasked with enhancing effective business practices throughout the university, including the implementation of transformative new financial and business information systems to provide electronic, paperless services for faculty, staff, and students. Miller will report to Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer Dwayne Pinkney.

“After a comprehensive national search, we determined the best candidate was already here at Virginia Tech. I am delighted that Ken will be continuing in the role he has been serving in since last fall as vice president for finance," Pinkney said. "Through his unmatched financial expertise into Virginia Tech operations, extensive service to the university, and collaborative mindset, Ken epitomizes what it means to be a steadfast public servant and even more, a Hokie.

“Ken is a tremendous asset to the university and a true team player. I have full confidence in his erudition, vision, and commitment to continuous improvement — all qualities that will serve the university’s portfolio of operations well,” Pinkney added.

Prior to the interim vice president for finance role, Miller was assistant vice president for finance and university controller since 2011 and university controller from 2001-11. He led financial management and accounting operations, including accounts payable, payroll, internal accounting control, accounts receivable, financial reporting, fixed assets, and insurance programs.

Miller received a bachelor’s in accounting from Virginia Tech and is a licensed Certified Public Accountant in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Prior to working at Virginia Tech, Miller served as a staff auditor for a national public accounting firm for several years and as a financial manager for the American Heart Association for five years.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to deepen my service to the university community as vice president of finance. I am proud to continue to lead an exceptional group of hardworking and committed employees in the Division of Finance,” Miller said.
