Virginia Tech cited as one of the best workplaces for commuters
Virginia Tech has been named one of the 2020 Best Workplaces for Commuters for offering employees and students exceptional commuter benefits.
Virginia Tech is among a select group of universities in the U.S. that have achieved the Best Workplaces for Commuters National Standard of Excellence by providing an array of commuter benefits, resulting in at least 14 percent of the commuting population not driving alone to campus within a 12-month period.

Virginia Tech offers employees and students numerous commuter benefit options, including:
- Free access to the award-winning Blacksburg Transit bus system with a Virginia Tech ID.
- The Hokie Bike Hub – a free, self-service bike repair and maintenance facility for students, faculty, and staff.
- Ride matching and a Guaranteed Ride Home program through RIDE Solutions.
According to the 2018 Virginia Tech Commuter Survey, 27 percent of faculty and staff commute via walking, bicycling, carpooling/vanpooling, or taking transit. Sixteen percent of faculty and staff surveyed stated that their primary mode of transportation is bicycling or taking transit.
All members of the university community are encouraged to share their feedback in the 2020 Commuter Survey, which is now open.
Virginia Tech’s efforts to enhance alternative transportation usage on campus were recently recognized in 2019 by the League of American Bicyclists, which designated Virginia Tech as a silver level Bicycle Friendly University. This honor recognizes Virginia Tech’s commitment to advancing and delivering a safe, bicycle-friendly campus for students, employees, and visitors.
Virginia Tech and its Alternative Transportation Department continue to improve infrastructure and conditions for cyclists through a variety of efforts, including installation of more bike racks and operation of the Hokie Bike Hub, where cyclists have access to tools and resources for self–service bike repair and can attend bike-themed workshops and social events. Additionally, the Alternative Transportation Department promotes safe cycling by offering cycling safety courses, hosting events, and providing educational materials throughout the year.
