Eugene Seago, professor of accounting and information systems in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Curling Professor Emeritus of Accounting and Information Systems by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 1970, Seago is a nationally recognized expert in the area of tax accounting and has published more than 175 books and articles on this topic. In addition, he has served as a consultant to the Internal Revenue Service, the U.S. Department of Justice, and the U.S. Department of Commerce. He has appeared as an expert witness in tax cases before the United States Tax Court, the District Federal Court and the Federal Claims Court, as well as testified before Congress about proposed tax laws. 

He has also conducted numerous workshops and seminars on personal use of computers in accounting and taxation.

In the Virginia Tech classroom, Seago was a dedicated teacher of a large number of courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has served as the accounting students’ undergraduate academic adviser for more than 10 years.

In 2008, Seago was named the Outstanding Tax Educator by the American Tax Association.

Seago is a member of the American Bar Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, American Accounting Association, American Taxation Association, and Virginia Bar Association. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, an M.B.A. from Florida State University, and a law degree and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia.
