The College of Engineering’s Rising Sophomore Abroad Program, recipient of the 2019 Senator Paul Simon Spotlight Award for outstanding innovation and accomplishment in campus internationalization, is now accepting applications for study abroad tracks traveling in summer 2020.

Applications are due on Sept. 28. Interested first-year and transfer engineers may apply through the Rising Sophomore Abroad Program application page of the Virginia Tech Global Education Office.

Led by the college’s engineering education department and the largest study abroad program at Virginia Tech, the initiative facilitates opportunities for students to explore extended international academic and discipline-specific hands-on experiences, differences in political, technological, social, cultural, environmental systems, and strengthens global competencies, as they progress through their undergraduate careers. 

Prior to the international experience, students take a three-credit on-campus global engineering course followed by multiple concurrent international tracks of short-term international experiences. 

While abroad, students can participate in internships, co-ops, and undergraduate research, or participate in faculty-led programs. The program connects undergraduates with international companies and universities to further their student experience and professional trajectory.

With approximately 180 students participating in multiple international tracks each year, the May 2020 program is offering the following 10 courses:

Each track includes visits to companies, universities, and cultural and historical landmarks. Students are able to experience engineering in the context of the countries they are visiting as they engage with local engineers and students.
